496. Killough
Killough is a quiet backwater. The main street, unbroken facades of single and two storey early Victorian houses, is lined with tall sycamore trees. The village has a pretty parish church on the wall of the silted up harbour and almshouses built by Lanyon, Lynn and Lanyon in 1868. There is little work here, since the brickworks closed. You could park past the windmill stump near the coastguard station, and walk to St Johns Point along a rather rough coastal path. Alternatively, drive to the point where there is a lighthouse and a ruined tenth century church and then walk towards the beaches of Minerstown and Tyrella Strand along the edge of Dundrum Bay for ever improving views of the Mournes.

497. Killyleagh
Going south on the A22 a startling skyline of romantic turrets comes into view just before the village. Killyleagh Castle, home of the Hamilton family since the Seventeenth-century plantation, acquired its fairy-tale silhouette in the 1850s when the turrets were added, but it is mostly the same castle that the second Earl of Clanbrassil rebuilt in 1666.
