393. Dundrum

Up a steep turning off the A2 and surrounded by tall trees, ruined Dundrum Castle stands on a rock above Dundrum inner bay. Four miles (6 km) north of Newcastle is Dundrum, noted for its twelfth-century castle a circular keep inside irregular curtain walls, surrounded by a rock-cut fosse. There are continuous mural chambers in the wall of the top storey. This castle probably followed the lines of the ancient palisaded fort called Dun Rudhraidhe (Rory's Fort), which occupied the site in early times.

396. Groomsport

At Groomsport where Marshal Schomberg landed with 10,000 Willamite soldiers in 1689, the harbour has a sandy beach on either side. Two eighteenth-century cottages close to the water, one still thatched, are used for art exhibitions.

The 'Row' was a row of fishermen's cottages that used to fringe the harbour. You can buy the paintings propped along the walls outside. Excursion boats go to the Copeland Islands in summer. Proximity to Bangor 3 miles west may account for the modern bungalow developments, and caravan sites. Some funny little brightly painted wooden prefabs with posh names at Fort Hill are holiday homes.
